Bend It Like Bauer

I heard through the grape vine that poop is the new pink! Whenever I hear that saying (grape vine) I think of those creepy California Rasins that sang songs, and you would get the box of their rasin in your halloween bag (why people thought as children we loved rasiens is still a mysterty too me), I felt like I was eatting those little characters out of a box.

It has just been brought to my attention (stereogum.com) that FINALLY after five years Veruca Salt is releasing a new album on September 12. The title being IV to represent that it is the fourth album. However, I don’t understand why Louise Post would do this, I mean Veruca Salt is completely a different band then when “American Thighs” and “Eight Arms to Hold You” meaning the only member that was apart of VS was Post. I love this band dearly, and I have always loved Loiuse style of writing, but I wish that the album name was different. Then again, what the fuck does it really member? I am still going to buy it.

Veruca Salt was one of those staples in my life, for awhile I thought that women in music were kind of the lame slog, sad music, so I wasn’t huge into it. I was shoping at a cd store in Saskastoon, must have been thirthteen at the time, and saw the album “American Thighs” it was like 7.99, or something. I remember I always thought that Veruca Salt was something to do with the Velvet Underground, to this day I can not tell you why I thought this, but I bought the cd. I would listen to that album of repeat. I remember we went up to Utah to visit my mom’s family and we were driving through the graveyard that her grandmother was buried (or it was a pet semertary) and the song that I remember was “Fly” which forever was my favorite track, though it was soon replaced with “Number One Blind.”

Back to what I was saying about woman in the music industry, there was Hole, though I hadn’t discovered “Live Through This,” but I owed all The Cranberries albums and thought Sheryl Crow was awesome, and “crazysexycool” was the great thing since sliced bread (note: I hate that saying I wish that I never said it). Veruca Salt opened this door to bands like Babes In Toyland, Belly and Tanya Donelly, L7, Pet, Letters To Cleo (who’s drummer joined Veruca Salt, who is now lead singer of American Hi-fi, Stacey Jones) The Breeders, Pj Harvey, Juliana Hatfield and etc, and this chick could rock, not just rock but FUCKING rock.

This is what started it, this one little band that in 1997 broke my heart when band member and best friend forever Nina Gordon and Louise Post called it quits and made me doubt all my current friendship last (I still have two from when I lived in Saskatoon, but hey I moved around a lot and discovered hip hop and writing pornographic love stories.) But all good thing come to an end…sometimes.

Ps I never discovered hip hop, I just love the “Ridin” song, and T.I. Also if anyone that reads this care Jason Collette has an amazing solo album out that feature some of Broken Social Scene, Amy Millian (Stars, who has an amazing solo out as well), Leslie Feist (MUSHBOOM) and Emily Haines (of Metric). Fuck Canada when did we get such amazing music scene… Nickleback screwed us up for awhile.
